    April Events at Montpelier Arts Center 

    Riverdale, Md. – The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC), is proud to announce its new events at Montpelier Arts Center in Laurel, Md. Available to the public throughout April, they include:

    April 2 – May 1, 2022 

    Public Reception: Saturday, April 10, 2022, 2–4 pm

    53rd Annual Laurel Art Guild Juried Exhibition – Organized by the Laurel Art Guild, this annual exhibit is juried by a regional professional and showcases the work of artists ages 18 and older who live in the Washington metropolitan area and surrounding states. The exhibit includes paintings, drawings, photographs, wall-hung sculptures, collages, and more.

    Thursday, April 7, 2022, noon  

    Venus Dodson- Venus Dodson’s objective is to soothe the soul, bring joy, and encourage compassion through music. Her versatility is reminiscent of the legendary Ella Fitzgerald, and her styling is comparable to that of great Sara Vaughn. Though Venus is her own planet, her love for Brazilian jazz is quite evident in her lively performances.

    Friday, April 22, 2022, 8 pm 

    Eric Byrd Trio- For almost two decades, the Eric Byrd Trio, pianist/ vocalist, Eric Byrd, bassist Bhagwan Khalsa, and drummer Alphonso Young Jr., have traveled the world as enthusiastic ambassadors of jazz. Rooted in swing and be-bop, the trio also embraces gospel and blues as core elements of their expansive performance style. Their body of work spans seven unique studios and live recordings in which they shine as a trio. Montpelier is delighted to bring the Eric Byrd Trio to the stage to perform standard and original compositions.

    Saturday, April 30, 10 am- 4 pm 

    Annual Montpelier Festival of Herbs, Tea, and the Arts – Welcome spring and delight in the sights and sounds of nature, art, and history at this fun festival for the entire family. While visiting the Montpelier Arts Center, our Resident Artists will be happy to meet you and give engaging conversation about the art they do, the media used to produce it, and in some cases, give a demonstration of their techniques. On your stroll through the Arts Center, take time to see our three galleries and view the exhibitions of David Brosch, Catherine Kleeman, and the Laurel Art Guild 53rd Annual Juried Exhibition. At 1 pm, join us in the Main Gallery for a classical recital featuring Grace Liu to round out your day with us.

  • Sculpture Garden Tours Announced by Dept of Parks and Rec., Pr. Geo. County

    Sculpture Garden tours at Oxon Hill Manor

    Riverdale, Md – The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of The M-NCPPC, announces its upcoming tours of the Sculpture Garden at Oxon Hill Manor. Join exhibit curator, Sarah Tanguy, for a guided tour of “Past & Present,” an outdoor sculpture exhibit presented by the Washington Sculptors Group and Oxon Hill Manor.

    Free of charge and open to all ages, tours will be held on Saturday, April 2nd, 2-3 pm and on Thursday, June 23rd, 7-8 pm. Participants will learn about the local, national and international sculptors in this exhibition. Light refreshments will be served.

    About Oxon Hill Manor

    Oxon Hill Manor is one of only two early 20th century Classical Revival mansions in Prince George’s County. Built in 1929, Oxon Hill Manor is a large, two story neo-Georgian brick mansion, with a hip roof, flanking wings, and fine decorative detail. It was designed by architect Jules Henri de Sibour for career diplomat Sumner Welles and was built near the site of the original 18th century Oxon Hill Manor, which was destroyed by fire in 1895.   • Dept of Parks and Rec, Pr. Geo. County Gymnast Wins Gold in Germany

    Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Gymnast Secures

    Gold Medals in Germany

    Riverdale, MD – The M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County is proud to announce one of its gymnasts, Khoi Young, emerged as the standout at the DTB Pokal Team Challenge in Stuttgart, Germany – winning individual titles on pommel horse and vault.

    A 19-year-old from Bowie, MD, Young joined the Gymnastics program (https://www.mncppc.org/5120/Gymnastics) at the Prince George’s Sports and Learning Complex as a preschooler in 2006. He then joined the Sportsplex Gymnastics team in 2008. Under the mentorship of Coach Bob Lundy, Young went on to compete at the collegiate level for Stanford University.

    On March 18, Young participated at the Team Challenge as a member of the United States Men’s National Team at the artistic gymnastics competition. He scored a 15.000 on pommel horse and 14.916 on vault to collect his second and third gold medals of the weekend. 

    The 2022 DTB Pokal Team Challenge and Mixed Cup (https://www.enbw-dtbpokal.de/) is an artistic gymnastics competition. It features a Team Challenge that has five-person teams representing their country in separate men’s and women’s junior and senior divisions and a Mixed Cup featuring teams comprised of three men and three women. The Mixed Cup features teams from four nations: host nation Germany, Italy, Canada, and the United States.

    The Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, sends its warmest congratulations to Khoi on this monumental achievement.
