    M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County Announces 

    In the Life: An LGBTQ+ Pride Celebration

    Riverdale, MD – To commemorate Pride Month, The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the M-NCPPC, is proud to present its annual event – In the Life: An LGBTQ+ Celebration.

    The event will be a day focused on celebrating and highlighting Prince George’s County LGBTQ+ community and allies. In the Life will showcase the DMV Ballroom scene and its contributions to mainstream entertainment and fashion. The event will consist of 4 workshops dedicated to teaching registered participant skills from that particular ballroom category. The categories are Vogue, Female Figure Runway, Male Runway, and Choreography in heels. Workshops will support building confidence, stage presence, and allyship. The Evening concludes with a mini-ball for participants to showcase what they have learned. Winners will receive trophies and gift cards.

    The Department’s Assistant Director for Prince George’s Plaza Community Center, Tristan Colding, is spearheading the event. He stated, “During Pride Month, we recognize the willpower and resilience of those in our community who are fighting to live genuinely and freely.” He continued, “The Department continues its commitment to support inclusivity of all people, and looks forward to celebrating pride month for years to come.”

    In The Life: A LGBTQ+ Pride Celebration Ballroom Workshop will take place on Friday, June 24, 2022, at the Kentland Community Center, 2413 Pinebrook Ave, Landover, MD 20785.     2022 Fairwood Community Park Performance Series and Music Festival

    Riverdale, MD – The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the M-NCPPC, is proud to announce the return of its Fairwood Community Park Performance Series and Music Festival. After a three-year hiatus due to COVID-19, the Fairwood Community Park Performance Series and Music Festival is back – with live and in-person performances.

    This year’s performances – with R&B, soul, jazz, pop, funk music and Shakespeare – will be a revival of the celebration of culture and community. They will feature outstanding performances from musicians, actors, and groups from Prince George’s County and beyond.

    The 2022 lineup includes:

    Sunday, June 12, 4-6 pm 

    The Walker Redds Project:   Soul, jazz, and the groove met and created ‘pocket jazz.’  

    Sunday, July 10, 3 pm 

    Shakespeare in the Parks presents MacBeth. This version is inspired by the novel-turned-movie Gangs of New York.

    Sunday, July 17, 4-6 pm 

    N2N Band: Old and new school R&B, soul, Motown, and contemporary pop.

    Sunday, August 14, 4-6 pm 

    Brencore Allstars Band: Taking you back to the music of the rock, funk, soul superstars of yesteryear.

    Sunday, August 28, 1-6 pm. The Fairwood Music Festival 

    Elyscia: Fresh. Urban. Now. This young 2021 American Idol finalist will bring down the house!

    The Exclusives: A top cover band playing a variety of music from the 60’s to today.  

    Kevin Jackson: Smooth jazz guitarist/composer plays selections from his chart-topping release Elevation and more.

    DC Fusion: One of the region’s most in-demand party bands playing R&B, soul, go-go and more.  

    Performances are FREE and suitable for all ages.

    Juneteenth Festival Announced by M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, 

    Prince George’s County

    Riverdale, MD – The Department of Parks and Recreation in Prince George’s County, part of the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission, is pleased to announce its 2022 Festival for Juneteenth: the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Marking the date that the last enslaved people learned of their freedom, the month of June and the nineteenth day were combined to form the word Juneteenth.

    As a part of the Department’s ongoing mission to provide exciting and unique cultural programming to county residents, the Juneteenth Festival is a must-attend event for the young and young at heart. The festival takes place Saturday, June 18th at Watkins Regional Park from 12 – 5pm and includes:

    • Live entertainment – Kindred the Family Soul, EU featuring Sugar Bear, Coyoba Dance Theater, Prince George’s Police Department Band, A Tribute to Maze Featuring the BRENCORE Allstars
    • Visual art exhibition – Stained Glass by Arvid Lee
    • Arts activities – Arts on a Roll, Words Beats and Life, Taratibu Youth Association Dancers
    • History activities – Freedom cabin, History scavenger hunt
    • Food and merchandise vendors
    • Non-profit exhibitors
