SUMMARY:Frolic - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:* This exhibition runs Jun. 15–Aug. 15\, with a public reception on Sat.\, Jun. 20 and an artist and curator talk on Sat.\, Jul. 18. * \n\n\n\nCurated by Rashad Ali Muhammad in celebration of Pride Month\, Frolic is a bold tribute to queer resilience\, creativity\, and joy. Featuring C.S. Corbin\, Chrys Seawood\, Michael P. Jr.\, Miss Grace David\, and Shyama R. Cuver\, this exhibition asserts that joy is not just a byproduct of survival—it is a radical act of resistance. \n\n\n\nThrough collage\, sculpture\, installation\, and digital media\, these artists transform adversity into light\, affirming that queerness is a driving force for cultural progress\, innovation\, and healing. Radiant Resistance is a celebration of thriving\, existing\, and creating unapologetically.

DESCRIPTION:In recognition of America turning 250\, we are launching a self-guided option to Surratt Historic Site & Museum titled Remembering We the People: Race and Resistance in Civil War Maryland. In a nation whose founders declared “all men are created equal” while only granting freedom to a select few\, this exhibit seeks to acknowledge the full history of the site and tell the stories of those who forcibly lived and labored here. We invite you to explore the past\, the present\, and the unfinished revolution whose ideals our nation still seeks to embody.

SUMMARY:Visiting Resident Artist Exhibition - Alexis Janay\, The Light We Carry - Public Reception
DESCRIPTION:* This exhibition runs Jun. 27–Aug. 2\, with a public reception on Sat.\, Jul. 11. * \n\n\n\nThe Light We Carry is a portrait series celebrating those who shine authentically. Through vibrant color\, layered patterns\, and textured surfaces\, these works invite viewers to witness presence\, resilience\, and the joy of living as one’s true self. This exhibition offers a moment to slow down – to sit with each figure and feel the depth of their presence\, as each portrait holds a radiance beyond the individual\, suggesting a shared energy connecting us across experience and time. \n\n\n\nThe title reflects a commitment to carry that light forward – to honor it\, recognize it in others\, and allow it to grow. Individual brightness becomes collective: a source of connection\, belonging\, and possibility – an enduring light we hold and pass on.

SUMMARY:Maria Santiago: Designing Through the Geometry - Public Reception
DESCRIPTION:* This exhibition runs Jul. 27–Sep. 5\, with a public reception on Sat.\, Aug. 1. * \n\n\n\nDesigning through the Geometry comprises two series\, Jupiter Background in Black and Time\, by Argentinian artist Maria Santiago. Time is invisible. The Past-Present-Future is one with constant movement: yesterday\, today\, and tomorrow. Time transforms into small movements or changes. Time is magic. The artist focuses on color and time\, where everything is always moving and everything changes. However\, the background is completely quiet\, and the shapes are only inside the circle as time passes. This mixed-media show focuses on what it means to explore texture and bright colors against geometric shapes.

SUMMARY:Trial by Fire: 25 Years of the Washington Glass School - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2001\, the Washington Glass School has evolved from a local studio into a definitive pillar of the DMV arts landscape. Trial by Fire celebrates this quarter-century milestone\, honoring a community that redefined glass as a narrative and sculptural force. This anniversary exhibition brings together founders\, resident artists\, and alumni to explore the “Glass Secessionist” movement—a philosophy centered on storytelling and the marriage of glass with mixed media. From monumental public works to intimate sculptures\, the pieces on display reflect an enduring legacy of mentorship and technical innovation. This tribute highlights the school’s vital role in shaping the history and future of contemporary glass art in the Gateway Arts District and beyond.

SUMMARY:Michele Banks: Forces of Nature - Public Reception
DESCRIPTION:Forces of Nature presents recent works by Washington\, D.C.-based artist Michele Banks\, whose ink and watercolor paintings on yupo explore the invisible forces that shape our world—from microscopic atomic motion to the vast curvature of space. Through the interplay of charts\, graphs\, and expressive washes of ink\, her work reflects on memory\, connection\, and what it means to exist within both natural and social systems. DESCRIPTION:Young Sam Yoon’s richly atmospheric oil paintings invite viewers into emotional landscapes shaped by memory\, nature\, and time. Through layered paint and expressive\, gestural brushwork\, forms blur and dissolve into fields of texture and color\, creating a sense of motion and quiet intensity. Rather than depicting specific locations\, these works evoke emotional landscapes—impressions shaped by memory\, sensation\, and the feeling of being immersed in place.

SUMMARY:Sarah Presley: Silver Spark\, Lucky Star - Public Reception
DESCRIPTION:Sarah Presley creates a conversation between grief and the idea of home in Silver Spark\, Lucky Star. This collection features motifs of residential architecture reminiscent of the small town Presley grew up in\, and one she often returns to in her work. Through bright colors\, family photographs and vintage papers\, Presley evokes memories of home. The etchings and collages\, however\, frequently lack subjects\, leaving them specific to no one and emphasizing the empty\, unobtainable feeling of nostalgia.

SUMMARY:Lydia Peters: The Inward Canvas - Public Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Inward Canvas explores the act of turning internally in a world of constant external noise. This exhibition examines self-healing and restoration\, capturing subjects with closed eyes to symbolize the moment they disengage from the outside world and focus on their “internal map”—the geometric architecture of the soul. Drawing on Pablo Picasso-inspired energy\, Lydia Peters presents personal growth as a literal structural shift\, where color becomes personality and each hue reflects a distinct emotional frequency\, from the vital greens of growth to the royal golds of transcendence. A contemporary fine artist\, Peters uses the human form to document the structural evolution of the human spirit\, offering a visual language for self-restoration and internal alignment that reveals the beauty and complexity of looking within.

SUMMARY:Tim Davis: The Power Rooms - Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:The Power Rooms is an ongoing series of paintings that marks a significant evolution in the practice of Tim Davis. Shifting away from his previous focus on figures and portraits\, Davis utilizes the interior architectural space as a platform for surrealistic reimagining. By transforming walls and floors into narrative landscapes\, he creates immersive environments that invite viewers to step directly into the stories being told.  \n\n\n\nThese purposeful narratives confront the pressing issues of inequality\, discrimination\, racism\, and injustice\, intertwining them with history and culture. Davis’ work remains deeply rooted in the human experience\, specifically the Black experience as it relates to truth and identity. For Davis\, creating art for social change is a catalyst for the meaningful dialogue necessary to heal and find solutions to collective problems. Through these evocative spaces\, The Power Rooms examines the strength of a culture and the vital importance of reclaiming one’s history.
