It is closed on Mondays-Wednesdays\n\n\n\nMontpelier is honored to present\, in collaboration with the Braxton Institute\, Dr. Joanne Braxton’s moving photography of her odyssey to Ghana\, Ivory Coast\, and Senegal. The exhibit explores an unexpected\, very personal story and an encounter with ancestral memory. As a descendant of African people enslaved at Montpelier\, she hopes that you will see and feel some of what she saw and felt as she journeyed to discover the meaning of the words of her grandmother\, Emma Harrison\, “My father always said that we have a home over there.” Through her photography\, she honors her enslaved great-grandfather\, William Harrison\, and “diasporic Africans\, unwilling immigrants to the Chesapeake in the 17th and 18th centuries.” \n\n\n\nThis exhibition is produced in collaboration with the Braxton Institute for Sustainability\, Resiliency and Joy. Concord Historic Site is the host for this year’s event\, a former tobacco plantation-turned-center of African American resilience and legacy. Join us under the light of the harvest moon to reflect on the skills and traditions that enabled African Americans to find their way in the natural environment. \n\n\n\nThe evening will feature hands-on educational activities\, a panel of acclaimed speakers\, and intimate fireside conversations centering Concord’s evolving interpretation of Black history\, land stewardship\, and community legacy. \n\n\n\nExtend your stay with a contemplative and commemorative camping experience led by Outdoor Afro! This event is for all levels of outdoors-people. Please come prepared with the supplies listed above. We will all be camping in the same area and no one will be isolated from the group. Our Outdoor Afro leaders will be on site to help you find a good location\, pitch your tent\, and answer any other questions for beginner and experienced campers alike. \n\n\n\nWill there be food? \n\n\n\nYes\, dinner will be provided to all participants while supplies last. Those who choose to stay the night will be served light refreshments in the morning. Contact the site to discuss any dietary restrictions. \n\n\n\nCan I bring my own food? \n\n\n\nFood trucks will be on site to provide free meals up to a certain point in the program. After this\, you will have the option to purchase food. You’re welcome to bring your own food as well. We recommend food that can be chilled in a cooler or kept in your vehicle should you choose to bring your own food. \n\n\n\nIs there a parking fee? \n\n\n\nNo\, parking is free. First row of parking will be reserved for accessibility. \n\n\n\nIs smoking permitted since the event is outdoors? \n\n\n\nNo\, smoking is not permitted. All outdoor parks in Prince George’s County with the Department of Parks and Recreation are smoke-free to promote a healthy environment for everyone.
